15 Things White Mushrooms in Your Yard Might Be Telling You

Instead of simply removing the caps, consider looking at what’s happening around them.

  1. Removing the Mushrooms Doesn’t Remove the Fungus
If you don’t like the appearance of mushrooms, you can generally remove the visible fruiting bodies by hand while wearing gloves.

But don’t expect this to eliminate the fungal organism.

The majority of the fungus may remain beneath the soil.

Think of the mushroom as something similar to the fruit of a much larger organism. Picking the fruit doesn’t necessarily remove the underlying system.

That’s

why mushrooms can return repeatedly in the same location.

If the underlying source of

organic material and favorable conditions remains, new mushrooms may eventually appear.

  1. Their Presence Is a Reminder to Identify Them Before Touching or Eating Them
This is perhaps the most important lesson.

Never assume that a white mushroom is edible or harmless simply because it looks familiar.
