I Adopted Newborn Triplets After My Sister Vanished with Her Boyfriend—20 Years Later, She Appeared at Their Wedding

Finally, she said,

“Both.”

It wasn’t a beautiful answer.

But it was honest.

And honesty was the only thing anyone could build from now.

Part 10 — I Stayed

Months after the wedding, I found one of Vanessa’s old letters sitting on my kitchen table.

It had been written when the girls were three.

Vanessa had drawn three tiny birthday cakes across the bottom of the page.

Beside them she had written:

I hope they know someone out here still thinks about them every day.

I read the sentence twice.

Then folded the letter again.

For years, I had believed the story of our family was simple.

Vanessa left.

I stayed.

She failed.

I stepped in.

There was truth in that.

But not all of it.

The fuller truth was messier.
