Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes, Grandma. I’m your grandson.”
She reached for his hand.
“Well, aren’t I lucky?”
I stood in the doorway, unable to speak.
I’d called the police because I thought my son was hurting my mother.
Instead, I discovered he’d been carrying a burden too heavy for one person, trying to protect her while hiding his own fear.
He hadn’t handled everything correctly. He should have told me sooner, and locking her door had put her at risk.
But he loved her.
And that night I understood something I wish I’d learned earlier.
Sometimes the people we love are quietly struggling, and we don’t notice until fear makes us look closer.
