My ex-husband invited the former wife he believed was still childless and miserable to his family’s Christmas at their military estate. He never imagined I would arrive on a government tactical helicopter — with four eight-year-olds who had his face.

Four children. One woman. No help, no father, no maintenance, nothing from anybody.

Look at them. I have said that out loud too.

Some of that is true. And underneath it, for eight years, I had been building the exhibit — and all I was ever waiting for was a room to walk it into.

He sent me a room on a Tuesday in November and I was packed inside four seconds.

And there is the name.

I kept Vail. For eight years, through two promotions, with every form in that building saying Commander Vail.

I have told about forty people that it was for the children. So that all five of us would match on a form.

I have said that sentence in four interviews and twice at a table.
