The room seemed to tilt.
“You did what?”
“I drove to your parents’ house on a Thursday. Your dad wasn’t home. I asked Cecilia if she’d sit with me for ten minutes.”
“Leo, no. You didn’t.”
“I did.”
He swallowed.
“I told her I wasn’t there for money. I wasn’t asking for the trust fund. I wasn’t asking her to pay for the wedding.”
“Then what did you want?”
“I just wanted her to welcome you back.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Just her daughter,” he said. “Nothing else.”
I could barely breathe.
“What did she say?”
Leo hesitated.
That hesitation told me enough.
“She said I’d never be enough for you,” he finally said. “She said I’d figure it out eventually and save us both the trouble.”
