Sometimes he believed he was trapped inside the overturned vehicle again, smelling gasoline and hearing Rebecca tell him not to close his eyes.
That was why they slept in the same bed.

Because Daniel needed to monitor Noah’s breathing and stop him from wandering through the apartment while disoriented.
The clothing on the floor had been left there the night before. Noah had developed a fever and ripped the sensors from his portable monitor.
Evelyn lowered herself into a chair.
The grocery bags still sat untouched on the counter, an absurd reminder of the warm family dinner she had imagined on the plane.
“Why is the apartment so clean?” she asked.
Daniel released a long breath.
“Because Noah cannot tolerate anything being moved.”
