Before You Collect Rainwater, Know These Important Rules

v

Collecting rainwater in a household barrel is generally a practical way to conserve  water, but the rules surrounding rainwater collection can vary depending on where you live. In most cases, a simple barrel placed beneath a roof downspout is very different from a large system that stores, redirects, or interferes with naturally flowing water.

Green Living & Environmental Issues

Rainwater collection is often used for gardening, landscaping, and other outdoor purposes. A homeowner may place a covered barrel beneath a gutter to collect water that falls on the roof. The stored water can then be used when conditions are dry, reducing the amount of treated municipal water needed for some outdoor tasks.

The important distinction is between collecting water from a private property and changing the natural movement of water. Larger projects can involve ponds, reservoirs, dams, drainage systems, or other structures that affect how water moves across land. Those projects may be subject to additional water-rights, environmental, construction, or local permitting requirements.
