I turned the envelope over.
Then, with shaking fingers, I opened it.
Inside was a letter from Gianna.
It was addressed to both of us.
Behind the letter was a deed.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Leo.
“Your mom gave you her house?” I whispered.
“Paid off two years ago,” he said.
I couldn’t speak.
“She’s moving in with her sister,” Leo continued. “She wanted us to start married life somewhere that belonged to us.”
I looked down at the letter.
Gianna had written that she couldn’t give us money.
But she could give us walls.
Walls that no one would ever hold over our heads.
I read the letter twice.
Then I looked at my husband through tears.
“You’ve been carrying this the whole time?”
