“Since yesterday morning.”
“Why didn’t you say something at the courthouse?”
Leo took my hand.
“Because I didn’t want it to feel like a rescue from your parents.”
His voice softened.
“I wanted to tell you tonight, as your husband. Not as the guy fixing what your parents broke.”
That was when I finally broke down.
I pressed the deed against my chest and cried openly.
Leo reached over and wiped away my tears.
“I spent the last few minutes anticipating disaster,” I whispered. “But you’ve given me so much joy.”
He kissed my forehead.
“You choosing me was the very first blessing in my life.”
He smiled.
“I was just trying to give you a little of what I already got.”
And somehow, the fear disappeared.
